Introduction : Getting Started

Welcome to the Microsoft Visio 2007 Advanced workshop. You may already be creating some basic drawing in Visio. Now it’s time to unleash the full potential of this powerful application for creating diagrams and drawings.

Module 1 : Exploring Advanced Diagrams (I)

This module will provide grounding in some basic Visio terms before you start learning the procedures related to those terms. We’ll also create some drawings based on Visio templates: a calendar, a map, a flowchart, and an organization chart. You’ll also learn how to use perspective drawings.

Module 2 : Exploring Advanced Diagrams (II)

In this module, we’ll explore some more advanced diagrams, including network diagrams, marketing diagrams, workflow diagrams, fishbone (or cause and effect) diagrams, Project Management diagrams, Gantt charts, and PERT charts.

Module 3 : Working with Stencils and Shapes

This module will explain how to work with stencils. Remember that stencils are containers for shapes. First, we’ll look at how to create and save a custom stencil. Then you’ll learn how to add shapes to the stencil from other drawings or other stencils. Finally, we’ll look at the controlling shape placement on your drawings using the Snap & Glue tools.

Module 4 : Advanced Custom Shape Design

This module will explain the tools you need to customize shapes. You’ll learn how to create your own shapes and revise existing shapes. We’ll also take a look at how to lock and protect shapes so that they won’t get changed accidentally.

Module 5 : Layers (I)

This module introduces you to using layers in Visio. You’ll get an overview of layers, as well as learn how to create, remove, and rename layers. You’ll also learn how to set layer properties. This module also explains how to control shape placement.

Module 6 : Layers (II)

This module goes into more detail on using layers in Visio. You’ll learn how to create a layer. You’ll also learn how to rename or remove a layer. What if shapes were assigned to the wrong layer? You’ll learn how to assign shapes to a new layer. You’ll also learn how to assign color to a layer. This module explains how to protect a layer from changes once you have it just like you want it. Finally, we’ll look at how to print just the layers you want – one or more or all layers.

Module 7 : Multi-Page Drawings

In this module, you’ll learn how to work with Visio pages. First, we’ll look at how to add pages to a drawing. Then, you’ll learn how to arrange pages. You’ll also learn how to work with background pages. Finally, you’ll learn how to use hyperlinks to navigate between multiple pages in your drawing.

Module 8 : Creating Technical Layouts

This module explains how to draw with precision using the Size and Position window. We’ll take a look at viewing area measurements for your shapes. You’ll also learn how to set the drawing scale on your drawings. Finally, we’ll work with building plan layouts to practice your drawing skills.

Module 9 : Working with Data Graphics

In this module, we’ll look at using data in your drawings. First, we’ll look at how you can use data with graphics to create a professional diagram that combines textual and graphical elements to illustrate your data. Then, you’ll learn how to use the Data Selector Wizard to connect your drawing to an external data source. You’ll learn how to apply a data graphic to your drawing. Finally, you’ll learn how to edit the data graphic to get it looking just like you want.

Module 10 : The ShapeSheet

In this module, we’ll take a look at the ShapeSheet. You’ll learn how to view the ShapeSheet and how to modify ShapeSheet data. You’ll also learn how to use formulas in the ShapeSheet.

Conclusion : Wrapping Up

Although this workshop is coming to a close, we hope that your journey to improve your Visio 2007 skills is just beginning. Please take a moment to review and update your action plan. This will be a key tool to guide your progress in the days, weeks, months, and years to come. We wish you the best of luck on the rest of your travels!
