Access 2010 Expert

Your participants will learn how to use the advanced features of Access 2010. This workshop is designed to go beyond a basic understanding and to explore the more advanced features of Access 2010 in a practical way. This workshop incorporates a hands-on approach to learning. They will get a chance to practice some of the advanced features right on a computer.

You can use advanced forms and tasks to do even more in Access than you have previously learned. For example, you can use Access to create mailing labels, work with queries, and publish a Web database among other things. By the time your participants finish this course, they will be able to navigate Access 2010 and create reports like a pro. Sit back, relax, and have fun. You are in for a thrilling ride

Objective:

  • Work with Database Properties
  • Encrypt a database with a password
  • Save an object
  • Set general, current database, datasheet, object designers, proofing, and language options
  • Customize the Ribbon and the Quick Access toolbar
  • Hide/unhide and freeze/unfreeze fields in a table
  • Modify field descriptions and properties
  • Append records to an existing table
  • Import data as a linked table
  • Understand linked table errors
Introduction : Getting Started

Welcome to the Access2010 Expert workshop. This course covers everything from customizing Access so that it works exactly how you need it to, to expert-level table, query, form, and report tasks. By the time you finish this course, you will be able to make the most out of Access 2010.

Module 1 : Working with the Access Environment

This module will get you more confident with customizing the Access Environment. First, we’ll look at the Database Properties dialog box, where you can attach different types of information to a database to help with organizing your files or to help with searching for a particular file. Then we’ll look at how to encrypt a database with a password. Finally, you’ll learn how to use the Save Object As command.

Module 2 : Working with Access Options (I)

The Access Options dialog box allows you to customize Access to make it easier for the way YOU use it. The Access options dialog box has several tabs. We’ll first look at the General, Current Database, and Datasheet tabs.

Module 3 : Working with Access Options (II)

In this module, we’ll continue looking at the Access Options dialog box. This module considers the Object Designers, Proofing, Languages, and Client Settings tabs. You’ll also learn how to customize the Ribbon and the Quick Access toolbar.

Module 4 : Working with Tables

In this module, you’ll learn how to work with tables to customize how they work in Access. You’ll learn how to hide and unhide fields first. Then you’ll learn how to freeze fields, which makes them visible even when scrolling to other areas of the table. You’ll also learn how to unfreeze fields when you have finished. Then we’ll look at data types. You’ll learn how to modify your data type on the fly, which means you don’t have to open the table in design view to change a field’s data type. You’ll also learn how to change the field description. Finally, we’ll take a closer look at all of the field properties available when working with a table in design view.

Module 5 : Importing Table Data

This module goes into more detail when working with data from other sources. You’ll learn how to append records to an existing table. You’ll also learn about linking Excel data to your database. Finally, we’ll talk about some potential problems when you link from an Excel spreadsheet and how to correct those problems.

Module 6 : Working with Queries (I)

This module will take a closer look at queries. You were introduced to a select query and an append query in Module six. This module will provide additional practice in those queries, as well as information on creating a make table query and a cross tab query.

Module 7 : Working with Queries (II)

In this module, we’ll keep looking at queries. First, we’ll discuss the Show Table command in case you want to modify queries that you have created. We’ll also discuss how to remove tables from your design. This module also explains how to create an update query and a parameter query. Finally, you’ll learn how to use a query with joins to compare the information in two different tables.

Module 8 : Working with Forms

In this module, you’ll become an expert at creating forms in Microsoft Access. First, you’ll create a blank form with a few controls added from the Field List pane. Then you’ll learn more about using the form controls. You’ll also learn how to use the header and footer tools. This module explains how to use the Form Design Arrange tools, background images, and themes to help you make your form look great. For even more formatting options, you’ll learn about conditional formatting. Finally, you’ll create a quick navigation form to help users get around in your database.

Module 9 : Using Reports

This module helps you learn more about creating reports in Access 2010 so that you can analyze your database information. First, much like creating a blank form, you’ll learn about creating a blank report. You’ll learn about the header and footer tools for reports. You’ll also take a closer look at the Property Sheet to help you control the features of your report. Finally, you’ll learn about the additional tools for arranging, formatting, and laying out your report.

Module 10 : Using Macros and Code

You can add logic to events that occur in your database, such as adding, updating or deleting data in a table. This module explains the types of macros and gives you a chance to create a user-interface macro as well as a data macro. You’ll also learn about the Macro Tools Design tab and the Action Catalog to help you refine your macro. You’ll also learn about Visual Basic and standard modules and class modules.

Conclusion : Wrapping Up

Although this workshop is coming to a close, we hope that your journey to improve your Access skills is just beginning. Please take a moment to review and update your action plan. This will be a key tool to guide your progress in the days, weeks, months, and years to come. We wish you the best of luck on the rest of your travels!
