Introduction : Getting Started

Welcome to the Microsoft OneNote 21013 Essentials workshop. OneNote is a program that helps you collect notes about anything. You can store all of your notes – in a variety of formats – in one place. Then you can organize and share your notes.

Module 1 : Your First Notebook

This module explains how to open OneNote and work with your default notebook. You’ll learn about Notebooks and the Cloud. You’ll also gain an understanding of the OneNote interface. Finally, you’ll learn about how the information in your notebook is saved and how to export a notebook as a package.

Module 2 : Working with Text

This module helps you work with the text in your notebook. You’ll learn how to type titles and text. You’ll also learn about the copy and paste and undo and redo commands. You’ll learn how to add extra writing space anywhere on the page. You’ll also learn how to format the text.

Module 3 : Working with Pages and Sections

In this module, you’ll learn different ways to add pages and sections for organizing those pages. We’ll look at adding sections and section groups, first, because when you add a page, it is automatically added to the current section. Next, we’ll learn how to add pages and create sub-pages. You’ll also learn how to add pages using a template. While we are talking about templates, you’ll learn how to set a default template for the current section to determine a look for all new pages. You’ll also learn how to create your own template using a page you have modified. We’ll move on to renaming and deleting pages, as well as learning how to work with sections and section groups.

Module 4 : Staying Organized

The flexible organization options are one the greatest advantages to using an electronic notebook. In this module, you’ll learn about the navigation bar to help you organize multiple notebooks. You’ll learn about the drag and drop option for moving pages, sections, and section groups – not only in the current notebook, but to any open notebook. You’ll learn how to find pages by those recently edited, by author, and by previous versions. You’ll also learn how to use the notebook recycle bin.

Module 5 : Tagging and Searching Notes

In this module, you’ll learn how to use the OneNote search tools. You’ll also learn about tagging – a OneNote method to find just what you need very quickly. You’ll learn how to apply tags and how to create your own tags. Finally, we’ll look at creating Outlook Tasks from your notes.

Module 6 : Using Send to OneNote

This module focuses on the Send to OneNote tool that you may open at the same time as OneNote (a checkbox on the tool controls that). First, we’ll use it to create a quick note – something like a sticky note, but it doesn’t get deleted when you close it. Next, you’ll learn how to take a screen clipping, which allows you to take a picture of anything on your screen and save it in your notebook. The third tool we’ll investigate is the Send to OneNote ability to send a web page or file to your notes. Finally, you’ll learn about the Quick Notes notebook.

Module 7 : Inserting Basic Objects

In this module, you’ll learn about inserting a number of different objects into your notes. First, you’ll learn how to insert a table. Next, we’ll look at adding files, both as a printout and as an attachment. You’ll learn how to add images from your computer or from online sources like Office clip art. Then you’ll learn how to use links. We’ll end the module with discussions on the calculator capabilities and inserting equations.

Module 8 : Drawing in OneNote

The pen is an important tool in OneNote. You can handwrite, draw freehand, or insert shapes. We’ll start with a discussion on using OneNote with a Touchscreen. You’ll learn how to choose a pen color and thickness. Then you’ll learn about drawing and handwriting. You’ll also learn how to draw shapes. Once you have ink in your notes, you can select, pan, or erase the ink. Finally, we’ll look at how to convert ink to text

Module 9 : Reviewing Your Notes

This module explains the different views available for OneNote, as well as how to check your spelling and use the thesaurus. You’ll also learn how to time stamp items.

Module 10 : Sharing Your Notes

This module looks at sharing your notes. You’ll learn how to invite people to use the notebook that is stored in the cloud by default. You can also share the notebook by sharing a link, which is helpful if you don’t know the email addresses for everyone that might need access to the notebook. Finally, you’ll learn how to preview and print your notes.

Conclusion : Wrapping Up

Although this workshop is coming to a close, we hope that your journey to improve your OneNote skills is just beginning. Please take a moment to review and update your action plan. This will be a key tool to guide your progress in the days, weeks, months, and years to come. We wish you the best of luck on the rest of your travels!
