Introduction : Getting Started

Welcome to the Microsoft Outlook 2013 Essentials workshop. Outlook is a powerful email application. However, it does much more than that to help you stay organized. With integrated mail, calendars, people and tasks, Outlook can help you manage every aspect of your life.

Module 1 : Opening and Closing Outlook

In this module, you’ll get your first introduction to Outlook. You’ll learn how to open Outlook and how to set up your email account. You’ll learn about the Ribbon and the Status bar, as well as about how Backstage View works in Outlook. You’ll also learn about accessing your Microsoft Account. Finally, we’ll look at closing Outlook.

Module 2 : Understanding the Interface

This module introduces you to the Outlook interface. You’ll learn about the different areas of the window that show when you open Outlook, including the Folders pane and the Reading pane. You’ll also learn about the To-Do Bar, which can include tasks, calendar, and people. Finally, you’ll learn how to peek at the other modes.

Module 3 : Working with the Message List and the Reading Pane

Now it’s time to start reviewing your messages. You’ll learn how to preview messages in the Message List, as well as how to use the Reading pane. You’ll also learn about sorting, filtering, and grouping your Message list, so that it works best with the way you work. This module also covers inline replies, so that you can quickly reply to or forward a message you receive. Finally, we’ll look at working with attachments.

Module 4 : Using Message List Commands

In this module, you’ll get more information about working with your Message list. You will probably spend some time there if you get very many messages! First, we’ll discuss how to delete messages so you can clear out unnecessary items. You’ll also learn how to clear the Deleted Items folder. Next, you’ll learn how to ignore messages that are part of a conversation. For example, if you’ve been included on a distribution list for a message that turns into one reply after another that doesn’t really concern you. This module explains how to manually mark messages as read or unread, so that you can keep track of the items you still need to address. Finally, you’ll learn how to flag messages for follow-up, as well as how to create a custom reminder for a message.

Module 5 : Creating a New Email

Creating new email messages is the number one reason people use Outlook. It includes easy-to-access tools for addressing, formatting, adding attachments, and sending messages. This module shows you how to create a new email message, including creating the body. You’ll learn how to use the addressing tools and how to attach a file. Finally, you’ll learn how to send the message.

Module 6 : Managing Email

This module will help you learn how to manage all of those messages. First, we’ll take a look at printing an individual message if you absolutely must have a hard copy. Next, you’ll learn about creating folders to organize messages that you want to save. You’ll also learn how to move your messages to those folders. You’ll learn how to rename, move, and delete those folders as well. We’ll also look at creating shortcuts to the folders you use most in the Favorite Folders area on the Folders pane. Finally, you’ll learn how to send and receive mail more quickly than the default time period between the automatic send/receive actions.

Module 7 : Searching for Items

Outlook provides several tools to help you search for items. You can use standard or customized search folders to collect all messages (or other items) stored across different folders within Outlook. You can also quickly search for items within the current folder using Instant or Advanced search.

Module 8 : An Introduction to the Calendar

Outlook provides a calendar to help you manage your appointments. In this module, we’ll start with an introduction to the calendar interface and learn more about the weather bar. Then we’ll look at creating and editing appointments, as well as managing reminders and changing the view of your calendar.

Module 9 : An Introduction to Tasks

Outlook can help you stay on top of your To Do list with tasks. In this module, we’ll look at creating and editing tasks, as well as updating tsk status and changing the view of your tasks.

Module 10 : An Introduction to Contacts

The Contacts mode allows you to capture and organize information about people. Contacts are like electronic cards that store a person’s information – as much or as little as you need. As you may have seen when working with Mail, once a person is stored as a contact, Outlook makes addressing mail to that person very easy. In this module, we’ll learn about the Contacts mode. You’ll also learn how to create and edit a contact. Then we’ll discuss ways of organizing your contacts. Finally, we’ll look at the different contact views.

Conclusion : Wrapping Up

Although this workshop is coming to a close, we hope that your journey to improve your Outlook skills is just beginning. Please take a moment to review and update your action plan. This will be a key tool to guide your progress in the days, weeks, months, and years to come. We wish you the best of luck on the rest of your travels!
