Introduction : Getting Started

Welcome to the Microsoft Project 2010 Essentials workshop. Project is a sophisticated project management software that can help project managers with planning, assigning resources, tracking progress, managing budgets, and analyzing workloads for projects.

Module 1 : Opening and Closing Project

In this module, you will learn to open and close Project and Project files. You will also explore the Project interface. Finally, you will learn to create a blank project and a project using a template.

Module 2 : Your First Project

In this module, you’ll get started using Microsoft Project by creating a basic project and setting up the project schedule. You’ll add tasks to your project and set constraints on those tasks to further customize your project.

Module 3 : Adding Tasks

This module will delve a little deeper into understanding tasks. Project 2010 introduces manually scheduled tasks. You can also schedule tasks automatically using the Project scheduling engine. We’ll discuss the key terms for understanding tasks in this module. We’ll also learn how to view task information and sort and filter tasks. Finally, we’ll take a look at task indicators.

Module 4 : Advanced Task Operations

In this module, you’ll learn some advanced techniques for working with tasks. You’ll learn how to split tasks to account for time away from a task. You’ll learn to link and unlink tasks, which can be used to create dependencies between tasks (such as when one task cannot begin until another is completed). This module also explains summary and sub tasks and how they can help you organize your project. Finally, you’ll learn how to create recurring tasks.

Module 5 : Adding Resources

This module introduces resources. Resources are the people, equipment, and materials needed to complete your project. This module will give an overview of how resources are used in Project 2010. You’ll learn how to add resources and view resource information. You’ll also learn how to assign resources to tasks. Finally, this module presents an introduction to leveling resources, which is a way to reschedule tasks so that your resources are not overscheduled.

Module 6 : Other Ways to View Project Information

In this module, we’ll investigate some of the other ways to view information about your project in Project 2010. First, we’ll look at a new feature in Project 2010: the Team Planner. We’ll look at the important task views and the important resource views. You’ll learn how about formatting your view to get it to look just like you want. Finally, we’ll look at how to format the Timescale.

Module 7 : Managing Your Project Status

This module will help you learn how to manage your project status. First, you’ll learn how to set a baseline. Then you’ll learn two different ways for updating tasks. You’ll also learn how to update the entire project.

Module 8 : Updating and Tracking Your Progress

An important aspect of project management is checking on the project’s progress and making adjustments in your plan where necessary. This module will explain first how to view the critical path. It will explain the use of change highlighting in Project 2010. You’ll also learn how to use the Task Inspector Pane.

Module 9 : Creating Reports

In this module, you will learn how to work with reports. Project includes many different default reports, as well as visual reports that work with either Excel or Visio. This module will explain how to create basic and visual reports. You’ll also learn how to compare different versions of a project to see what has changed.

Module 10 : Adding the Finishing Touches

You can share your project with others in a few different ways. This module will help you prepare your project for other eyes by checking the spelling. You’ll learn how to use the Page Setup dialog box. Finally, you’ll learn how to print, e-mail, and create a PDF of your project to share with others.

Conclusion : Wrapping Up

Although this workshop is coming to a close, we hope that your journey to improve your Project 2010 skills is just beginning. Please take a moment to review and update your action plan. This will be a key tool to guide your progress in the days, weeks, months, and years to come. We wish you the best of luck on the rest of your travels!
