Introduction : Getting Started

Welcome to the Microsoft Publisher 2013 Advanced workshop. Publisher is a task-based desktop publishing tool and a flexible and powerful authoring software. It goes well beyond what you can produce with a word processing software like Word. This course will help you learn more advanced skills for working with publications, including print, e-mail and web-based.

Module 1 : Advanced Content Options

In this module, you’ll learn how to get content from other places, either by importing the text from a file or by embedding an object, such as a PowerPoint slide or an Excel chart. You’ll also learn how to use WordArt.

Module 2 : Working with Text

This module focuses on enhancing your text. First, we’ll look at wrapping text around a picture, including making custom changes to the wrap points. You’ll also learn how to add text to a shape. The next lesson looks at typography – things like creating a drop cap and ligatures. The final lesson in this module looks at other building blocks and the building blocks library.

Module 3 : Working with Pictures

This module helps you put those finishing touches on the images in your publication. You’ll learn how to crop a picture or insert it into a shape (crop to shape). You’ll also learn how to make a color in a picture transparent. You’ll learn about other adjustments to the image as well, like corrections and color changes. Finally, we’ll take a closer look at the Format Picture dialog box, where you can change many aspects of your pictures.

Module 4 : Working with Shapes

This module focuses on shapes. You’ll learn how to change a shape, while retaining the positioning and sizing of the object. You’ll also learn how to work with curves by editing the points. This module looks at the Shape Effects available when working with shapes. You’ll also learn how to use the Measurements pane. Finally, we’ll take a closer look at the Format Shape dialog box.

Module 5 : Working with Graphics and Objects

In this module, you’ll learn more about working with objects. You’ll learn about the bring forward and send backward commands to layer objects. You’ll also learn how to group and ungroup objects and how to rotate and flip objects. This module explains the Publisher feature that helps you snap objects to other objects on the page. Finally, we’ll look at the Graphics Manager task pane to help you manage your pictures.

Module 6 : Working with Page Layout

This module focuses on your pages. We’ll start with learning how to change the template. The rest of the module covers the different types of guides to help you position objects on your pages.

Module 7 : Using Master Pages

Master pages are a little like a background, containing page elements that you want to appear on multiple pages. This module explains how to use the default master pages, as well as how to create your own master pages. With more than one set of masters, you can apply which ones you want to use on different pages in the same publication. You’ll also learn how to manage you master pages.

Module 8 : Working with Merges

Publisher allows you to create mail merges for your direct mail marketing campaigns, newsletter distribution, or other mail out publications. In this module, you’ll learn how to create a data source to use in Publisher’s mail merge. You’ll also learn how to use the mail merge wizard. This module explains how to work with recipients, including creating a new list in Publisher. This module will also explain how to add postal bar codes to labels or envelopes in Publisher. Finally, you can track the effectiveness of your marketing materials using different Publisher tools.

Module 9 : Creating a Catalog

In this module, you’ll learn how to create a catalog. Start with inserting catalog pages that will be part of a merge into your publication. Then you’ll create your product list. Next, you’ll learn how to choose your catalog layout. Finally, you’ll finish your catalog merge.

Module 10 : Working with Publication Information

In this module, you’ll work with some behind-the-scenes aspects of your publication. First, we’ll learn how to use the Design Checker to prepare for sharing your publication. You’ll also learn how to manage the embedded fonts. Next, we’ll look at the Publisher Options, where you can control the Publisher environment for your best work practices.
