Discovering Body Language: Inside Criminal’s Mind (2 days workshop)

The Dark Side of the NAUGHTY Brain: Inside Criminal’s Mind:

This course is for enforcement officers to understand the psychology of criminals. It contains 10 modules and lasts for 2 days. All modules have a practical part with activities to go into the topic and understand it much better.

We start with how law enforcement officers and by extension, anyone who cares about knowing people’s secrets can get them to say the hidden thoughts without being forced. Then we move to tips and tricks on mastering the body language understanding. It is important you know how to interpret body language signals because your success as a law enforcement officer is hanged on that factor.

Then we go for the concept of behavior. There is no how you can understand a person’s mind without knowing their behavior—this is the baseline on which every other factor is positioned. This part is brought to a close by discussing how an unwanted behavior can be changed. In body language discourse, history plays a prominent role. Culture is dynamic and as such, witnesses tremendous changes every now and then. A full grasp of the knowledge of history serves as a means of keeping ourselves up-to-date.

Then we go deep into the big and important part of our course – human brain. People have always substituted the human brain as the mind. However, we might not be able to bring anything worthwhile out of the generalization without understanding how the brain is structured. We discuss and learn the difference and application of both conscious and subconscious behaviors—the two main divisions of the brain. The sub-conscious behavior is said to be a trait that is outside of human control. That is, it cannot be controlled by human conscious effort and it is a function of accumulation of different experiences of life.

And then we jump to the most interesting block of this course – what goes on in every criminal mind. We dig deep into the criminal mind and compared it with other ‘normal’ person’s mind. We also take a look on the criminal’s brain in the context of situation – before, during and after the crime commitment.

Then we talk about the subconscious blueprint. The subconscious has innumerable impacts on people and the more we allow it, the farther it wields its power. As well we discuss the emphasis in body language. Ideally, the body language of an honest person is expected to resonate what they say with the words of their mouth. Anytime there is a deviation between the two, it means there is something fishy and the law enforcement officer must dig deep to find out. However, it should be understood that body language has its own limitations—it is not sufficient in its own self. Most times, criminals hide under these limitations to perpetrate crimes and go unpunished.

Module 1 : Mastering the Secrets of Body Language

We will start with understanding of the whole general concept of the body language and will see how to unravel someone’s secrets and how to keep them.
The move to the body language of criminals. Nobody emerges as a master of an art over the night. It is a continuous process where efforts are dedicated into becoming better at it. We will talk about how to master the skill of the body language reading and how to get the most of it.
In order to stay continually relevant, one needs to keep on improving on oneself. So, we will also touch the topic of behaviour.

Module 2 : The Historical View of the Body Language

History of some processes and knowledge evolution let us have a full perspective on what is happening and see the logical queue of all events happening this or another way.
So here we will talk about how the concept and the understanding of the body language evolved till the current state and where we are right now.

Module 3 : Understanding the Human Brain through Conscious and Subconscious Behaviors

Human brain is divided into two—conscious and unconscious. While we exercise some sort of control over the former, the latter is out of control of humans. First, we will talk about what is a human brain from different perspectives and will check some studies, and then go deeper in both parts of it as well as will see the clear link with behaviour: how both conscious and subconscious parts impact the behaviour and how does this process work.

Module 4 : The Powers of the Subconscious

No doubt, the subconscious mind is very powerful and it controls many things in human affairs. Although it can be subtly managed, but in most cases, people are oblivious of how to do this. This is to the advantage of law enforcement officers in a criminal setting. When people fail to triumph on natural factors, it becomes a huge point for the society as a whole.
The subconscious mind has a huge memory capacity that can contain all the pieces of information that we come across in our entire life. Here we will also talk on how to take control over it.

Module 5 : Limbic System Legacy

The criminal mind is no doubt complex and has to be approached a step after the other in order not to lump things together or leave out important details. The limbic system is an important aspect of the brain and when it is affected, it takes toil on a person. In this lesson, we are going to investigate how it is related to crime. This will help us to better understand the criminal mind.

Module 6 : Memory System—Why Liars Cannot Remember Their Lies

When the crime is committed and we talk to a criminal all we ask he takes from his memory. The information is processed and generated in a different way and “lays” in different parts of brain if its a recap of something that has happened or a lie that was generated in both ways planned or spontaneous.
The human memory is wired to work in a unique and understandable way. When we have a full grasp of the way it works, it becomes pretty easy to detect deception or any form of manipulation which it is being used for.

Module 7 : What’s in a Criminal Mind? Before, During and After Crime

We will talk from the practical point of view on our focus and understand what goes on in a criminal’s mind. First, we need to understand what the human mind is and how it is wired to work before doing comparison with that of a criminal.
In a bid to understand the criminal mind, we must consider what goes on in their innermost part before the crime is being perpetrated right to when they might have successfully carried it out. We will see each stage of the crime and see the behavior and the work of brain on all stages, so we will see the connection between all the information before.

Module 8 : Subconscious Blueprint & Emphasis in Body Language

Our mind is a really complex thing, that is not fully studied yet, so the information and the knowledge we operate with is not full and some things we can't say for sure. Also it has to be approached procedurally so as to ensure it is masterfully handled and well-understood. We will go further in our discussion of the subconscious by considering its blueprint.
Most times, the body language is used to lay emphasis—it is a means of further driving home a point which has been said verbally. It makes us understand the purpose which body language serves, how can we really understand and use it in our work.

Module 9 : Body Language and its Limitations: Crossing the Cultural Divides

Everything that we consider in this world has an important context. And every method or knowledge has its own circumstances most suitable to be applied. As well as body language has own limitations in the area of application. We will see how context and situation is important for relying on some cues and also talk about the culture as one of really important contexts.
Culture is a predominant issue that affects the reliability, acceptability and right interpretation of body language cues. Culture determines what we make out of body language signs. We will see some special moments for different countries and cultures to make it visible and understandable.

Module 10 : Criminals and the Use of Opportunities

This is a type of crime based on the opportunity. When a criminal doesn’t plan a crime but sees the opportunity and takes a decision to catch a chance. So here we will see the special moments about this type of crime and learn on techniques criminals can use to hide the lies.
Many criminals are also aware of different techniques and methods of understanding the body language and facial expressions, so through the time they’ve learnt to cheat on it. So, they stand in this gap in order to evade punishment for their sins. The best way to curb this act of criminality is to know how they go about it and then look for the signs in subsequent encounters. With this, you would be able to be on guard and take charge.

Conclusion : Reflection

People are involved in a difficult system of various interactions. Information nowadays is transmitted through so many channels. Also, humanity thanks to science start understanding many things about the human body and the human brain. So many people dedicated their lives to make our work now easier. Also, we strive to live in a more peaceful society and it takes a lot to establish it.
Understanding of the human body and brain gives us tools to indicate needed markers of behaviour. If we want to discover lies, we need to watch body language, face, eyes, listen carefully to the words. And the work is complicated a lot, because it takes us so many resources of our body to be activated as well as a lot of consciousness. Body language informs us about feelings and intentions of other people. From the evolutionary perspective, observing and reacting to emotional conditions of others may have been critical for our survival and the step for building a peaceful society.
Scientific literature suggests that we are more impressed by the information received non-verbally. Maybe this is because more than 50% of communication is based on our body language. On the other hand, less than 10% comes from what we actually say, while almost 40% comes from the tone of our voice.
At first look, it might seem easy to understand someone’s body language, through the perception of their body posture, gestures, and movements. But the process is more complex than it looks. It involves specific regions and complex neuronal networks in our brain decoding body expressions and giving them interpreted meaning. While the understanding of facial expressions is well studied, while it was paid less attention to understanding and decoding the body language.
The activation of specific brain regions by witnessing body language may vary in accordance with individual differences. Factors such as personality, genotype, and gender may affect the neuronal response to body language.
Despite our limited knowledge of body language processing by the brain, several conclusions can be made:
● Specific brain areas are activated in order to process body language and facial expressions. Among these, two visual areas and the amygdales are the most important ones.
● We may react more explicitly to body language expressing happiness than sadness, due to higher activation of specific brain regions.
● There may be some gender difference in reacting to body language, due to the different activation of brain areas. Still, personality is an important co-factor.
● Sometimes, like in the case of fearful body language, we might react unintentionally
