Introduction : Getting Started

Welcome to the Microsoft Visio 2007 Essentials workshop. This course will help you get up and running with Visio 2007. We’ll show you how to create drawings, add shapes, customize your screen for maximum productivity, and format your drawing.

Module 1 : Opening and Closing Visio

To get started, we are going to learn how to open and close Microsoft Visio 2007. We’ll also take a look at the Visio interface, which should be familiar to you if you’ve used previous versions of Visio. One new component is the Getting Started window. This gateway to Visio will help you pick the right drawing and get started on the right track.

Module 2 : Working with Files

Now that we know how to open and close Visio, and how to use the basic parts of its interface, we’ll take a look at creating a new drawing, as well as how to save, open, close, and switch between files.

Module 3 : Your First Drawing

Now that we’ve got the basics down, it’s time to create our first drawing! In this module, we’ll cover everything you need to create a basic Visio diagram.

Module 4 : Setting Up Your Drawing

So far, we have looked at how to use Visio to create a basic drawing. For anything but the simplest drawings, however, you will want to take some time to set up your workspace.

Module 5 : Basic Editing Tasks

In this module, we’ll explore some of the basic editing tasks that you’ll need to perform in Visio, including cutting, pasting, and duplicating shapes; undoing and redoing actions; finding and replacing text; and checking your spelling.

Module 6 : Formatting Shapes

Now that we’ve got the basics of drawing in Visio, let’s take a look at adding some color and spice to your diagrams.

Module 7 : Formatting Text

Now that we know how to format shapes, let’s look at how to format text. Visio offers many of the same formatting tools as word processors – you can change font face, size, color, and effects. We’ll look at all of these tools, plus the Format Text dialog, in this module.

Module 8 : Formatting Blocks of Text

In addition to basic text formatting options, Visio has some tools that can change the way blocks of text look. In this module, we’ll look at four of those tools: alignment, indentation, spacing, and bullets.

Module 9 : Formatting Your Drawing

Before you consider your drawing complete, ask yourself: • Are my shapes lined up? • Do the colors in the drawing complement each other? • Does my drawing have a clean, consistent, professional feel? • Does the position of my drawing on the page make sense? In this module, we’ll learn about tools that can help you answer, “Yes!” to all of these questions.

Module 10 : Adding the Finishing Touches

For our last module, we’ll look at putting the finishing touches on your drawing and getting it to where it needs to go.

Conclusion : Wrapping Up

Although this workshop is coming to a close, we hope that your journey to improve your Visio skills is just beginning. Please take a moment to review and update your action plan. This will be a key tool to guide your progress in the days, weeks, months, and years to come. We wish you the best of luck on the rest of your travels!
