Crime detection is a complex process that requires sound knowledge of human behavior. Timely detection of crime is a priority for every country in order to ensure a peaceful society. Countries all around the world need to empower law enforcement officers via training, courses, and conferences to master the art of crime detection.

Detection of crime is an art that requires skill. Some crimes are not easy to detect because the law enforcement officers will have to take pro-active steps to verify if the crimes were committed or not. Taking pro-active measures to detect crime requires unconventional approach.

Criminals are developing strategies to bypass law enforcement officers. They are using more technologies, and knowledge of human psychology to escape being caught. In this light, law enforcement agents after to go the extra-mile to build more efficient strategies to stay be ahead of criminals.

The truth is, crime leads to huge financial costs to governments in developed world, who spends huge amount of money to curb crime in their country, and make their countries a safe place to live. In most cases, crime is controlled in every country by law enforcement officers. Crime poses a huge threat to every economy. Crime leads to socio-economic costs to the government if they are not well managed.

Crime is not committed by a specific class of people. Nobody is born a criminal. It is most likely, an acquired behavioral trait. To reduce crime in any society, it is important, to tackle to behavioral patterns that lead to crime or make people become criminals.

This course provides a panoramic view of crime detection for law enforcement officers. The course is developed to provide law enforcement officers with latest psychological tool-set to detect crime and criminals in a timely manner.

Attendees of the program will learn how to use body language, facial expression, micro-behaviors, tone, and other psychological techniques to detect crime and criminals. They will learn how to differentiate between truth and lies, and the anatomy of lies. It may be impossible to catch criminals if we can’t separate the lies from the truth.

Module 1 : The psychology of criminals

Criminal behavior is set of behavioral patterns that exists in criminals. The essence of studying about criminal behavior is to understand how criminals behave, and why they behave the way they behave. The more we study and understand the psychology of criminals - how they think, how they act, and how they choose their victims, the better we can develop counter-measures to pre-empt and catch criminals before they act. In this module, participants will learn the basics of criminal behavior and criminal body language. Participants will learn about criminal body movements, postures and gestures, eye movements, facial expressions and body contact. Participants will be taught the importance of study body language, the effect of studying body language, why law enforcement officers misinterpret criminals’ body language. And how to pay attention for micro-expressions that don't tally with the body language.

Module 2 : How to Detect Criminal

Crime detection is one of the major roles of law enforcement officers. It is an integral part of every society. Besides maintaining rule of law in a country and ensuring the compliance of citizens in the society to the law, law enforcement officers have a very important role to play in controlling crime in a society. In detecting criminals, law enforcement officers can depend on a number of factors such as fear, micro-expressions, facial expressions, and emotions. In this module, attendees will learn how behavioral patterns of criminals before, during, and after crime, how to watch out for signs of fear on criminal's faces, signs of fear suppression on criminals’ face, how criminals exercise fear and how to use the fear factor to detect crime.

Module 3 : The truth about Liars

People lie. Why do they lie? What exactly makes people lie, and what is achieved when someone lies? Does the human nature encourage lying, because most adults have lied at least once in their lifetime? People can lie to avoid confrontation, or disturbance. But what can law enforcement officers learn from the psychology of lies and liars? In this module, participants will have comprehensive understanding of what a lie is, what it means to lie, why people tell lies, and how to detect lies. Participants will also learn how to describe lies, and why criminals lie. Apart from lies, participants are taught what truth is, and how to separate lies from the truth. They will learn how to distinguish truth from lies and vice versa.

Module 4 : Technologies in Lie detection

We are in the jet age, and technology is disrupting a lot of industries all around the world. What technologies are available for law enforcement officers to detect crime? One of the most used lie detection technology is a polygraph. A polygraph which is sometimes referred to as lie detection test is an electronic device that measures some psychological factors such as pulse, blood pressure, skin conductivity and respiration when a criminal is being interrogated. In this module, participants will learn how technologies are used in lie detection. They will learn about technologies such as: polygraph, MRI, voice analysis technologies, and polygraph technology. Participants will also learn strategies criminals use to deceive lie detection technologies.

Module 5 : How to Detect Criminal’s Lies

Many lies go uncaught. For law enforcement officers, the task is to spot lies without much hustle. A lot of criminals can easily get away with lying, because they have trained themselves how to lie without much stress. Law enforcement can be able to spot lies easily by learning how to read the signs, and clues, and then interpret them. There are different types of lie, such as telling half-truth, and not saying the whole truth, among others. It is not sufficient to learn about the different kinds of lie alone. In this module participants will not only learn about lies of omission, lies of commission, lies of exaggeration and lies of minimization, they will learn how to detect and handle different types of lies. Lastly, participants will learn body postures that indicate someone is lying.

Module 6 : Lie Detection Using Emotional Behaviors

How can emotional clues be used effectively in detecting criminals? It is a fact that criminals compose themselves when talking to law enforcement officers to hide their real emotions. They can mislead others by paying attention to their body language when lying. It is believed that most people can't detect a lie. Some criminals believe that is the status quo. The unique ability to detect the emotional state of criminals can aid in deciphering if they are lying or telling the truth. Participants will learn about the seven basic emotions, how to pay attention to them, and how to use the emotions as clues to detect criminals. They will learn how facial expressions and emotional state can reveal if someone is lying or not; expressions on people's face and what it says about them; and how criminals exercise fear.

Module 7 : Lie Detection Using Facial Expression and Micro-Behavior

The Facial expressions and micro-expressions provide some information that can be interpreted to know if someone is saying the truth or not. Law enforcement officers have to be grounded in the art of interpreting facial expressions to determine if someone is saying the truth or not. Micro-expressions refer to the involuntary, and brief expressions on people's faces based on their emotions. Learning how to interpret micro-expressions is very important in crime detection. In this module, attendees will learn about facial and micro-expressions, what they are, they can be used to detect criminals, how to interpret and decode them quickly, and how to decode facial expressions in a timely manner.

Module 8 : Lie Detection Using Body Movements

Most criminals are trained on how to lie and hide their true intentions. The premise of studying body-parts movement is that different expressions and postures may give some clue on the truth and non-verbal communication that can aid the law enforcement officers in information gathering. In this module, participants will learn how to pick the subtle messages that are communicated non-verbally by the movement of some body-parts of the suspect. These include: head, torso, arms and legs movement, postures, and gestures. Participants will also learn factors that may influence body language interpretation such as situation and environment, among others. Knowing the postures and body part movements to look out in crime detection is a valuable skill for law enforcement officers.

Module 9 : The Law Enforcement Officers and the Cultural Impact on Criminals

Law enforcement officers have to deal with crime using good techniques and technologies that are effective. In this module, we detail the role of law enforcement officers in curbing crime, as well as the cultural impact. We highlight the specific roles for law enforcement officers, and explain the how cultural factors can affect and impact crime detection. Further, attendees will learn why law enforcement officers should detect crime early, and possibly curb it at the roots before it becomes full-blown. To this, they must understand the impact of several cultures on body language in order to interpret and decode body language accurately.

Module 10 : Power of Observation

Observation provides a unique opportunity to watch a criminal and watch out for specific gestures and postures, facial expressions and micro-expressions, body language and body parts movements. All these observations can be interpreted separately or as a whole to determine if a criminal is saying the truth or lying. In this module, participants will about observatory techniques to use for interviews, investigations, and interrogations. Also, they will be taught what to watch for in during interviews, investigations, and interrogations. Participants will learn how to observe the criminals body language and behavior, and how to interpret them for evidence of truth or lies.

Conclusion : Reflection

In this course, we provided a comprehensive overview of criminal behavior and why they lie. We highlight and explain how the criminal’s body language can be effective in crime detection. We explore how to teach law enforcement officers, simple techniques, based on human behavior that they can use to detect lies, liars, and criminals. One of the things law enforcement officers should look out for in crime detection is the fear element. Even when criminals consciously suppress fear, law enforcement can watch out for clues through micro-expression and facial expressions. Participants learn about body-part movements, and how to interpret them, interrogation, investigation, and interview skills, and how to interpret postures and gestures. At the end of the course, participants are expected to be able to detect lies easily. Participants will also be able to interpret several facial expressions, body language, micro-expressions, body-part movements, postures, and gestures, to detect lies and crime.
